Could 2010 witness the world’s longest bra chain?

Thursday, August 5th, 2010 by dimurini

Waikato girl guides in New Zealand are collecting bras from around the region in hopes of creating the world’s longest bra chain. They plan on beating the 166,000 bra’s record set by an Australian organization several years ago, hoping to achieve an amazing record or 200,000 bras in the chain which will then we sent overseas at the end of the year to developing countries where women cannot afford them. The bra chain will also help to raise the awareness of breast cancer, encouraging women to get checked more regularly for breast cancer, so that the cancer can be caught at a very early stage. We at Di Murini with the girl guides all the best and hope that they do reach they’re record! We will be sure to follow this up in November which is their deadline. This will hopefully be a record breaking and a hope uplifting winter for us all.

Can Fish Oil cut down the risk of Breast Cancer?

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010 by dimurini

Researchers have foundthat fish oil can protect women from breast cancer, reducing their risk of developing tumours by up to a third.Fish oils supplementshave always been credited for having health benefits but have only now been linked to reducing the amount of woman being diagnosed with breast cancer. A study underwent with 35,000 women, finding that the women who regularly took the fish oil supplements were 32% less likely to develop breast cancer. Why may this be? Well, according to researchers is could be that the fish oils have a higher amount of omega-3 fatty acids in then most people are getting from the typical diet. None of this can of course be proven from one study but scientists at Harvard are said to be continuing their research into whether fish oil is preventative of diseases. It can be suggested though that at least one portion of oily fish is eaten a week as researchers have found that it has a direct effect on the lifespan of cells.

Kylie Minogue’s breast cancer cure charity concert

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010 by dimurini

Kylie Minogue is organising a charity concert for breast cancer cure to mark the 5th anniversary since beating the disease. The concert, which will hopefully be taking place in February of 2011 with raise money for breast cancer charities as well as awareness of breast cancer. The pop princess’s friends are also reportedly going to take part in the concert- including Elton John, the Scissor Sisters, and Robbie Williams. Kylie is also going to say a special thank you to the Paris-born doctor who dealt with her treatment, helping her return to health.
Kylie Minogue was diagnosed in 2004 and after going public; the amount of women going for breast cancer screenings went up by a third. Kylie will not take credit for this however, saying, “I know a lot of women went for screenings after my announcement. And a lot of people came up to me and said I saved them. Of course I didn’t but it made them go and get checked,”
We at Di Murini have only one thing to say, or quote rather- as Basement Jaxx once chanted after taking Kylie’s place at Glastonbury festival back in 2005 after her diagnosis- “2,4,6,8, who do we appreciate? Kylie!”. We look forward to the concert.

New Discovery of Breast Cancer Change

Friday, November 6th, 2009 by dimurini

Research by Breakthrough Breast Cancer scientists in Edinburgh has discovered a new trait in breast cancer cases.  The scientists state that 40% of breast cancer tumours change form when they spread to other parts of the body.  This means that patients, who continue with the same treatment without further investigation, may be taking medication that will not work.

They analysed 211 tumours which had spread from breast cancer to the lymph nodes under the armpit and found that the disease changed form in a large number of cases.  For example, 20 tumours changed from oestrogen receptor (ER) negative to ER positive.  This means that hormone therapies that would not have helped the original cancer could be used to treat the changed form of cancer.  Other tumours changed from ER positive to ER negative, leading to patients having treatment which would not benefit, and they have to experience the side effects for no positive reason.

Of the 46000 women diagnosed with breast cancer each year, 40% experience the cancer spreading to the lymph nodes. It is vital that women receive the correct treatment, particularly as cancer cells which spread in this way are more difficult to treat.

The scientists state that a clinical trial must ensue, to further research into this discovery and see how they can benefit patients.  This research must be done before its approval on the NHS.
